About the Crown Awards
The Crown Awards is the major annual fundraising event for the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S). Among the oldest in the nation, VP&S was the first to grant the MD degree. More than two hundred and fifty years later, its physicians and researchers are still pioneers in health care and leaders in medicine worldwide. For the eleventh year, the institution’s signature event, The Crown Awards, celebrates its benefactors, patients, and faculty for their commitment and dedication.
This year we will honor and recognize our front line health care workers, who have shown unwavering courage while exemplifying the highest values of the medical profession in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. The faculty, staff, students, trainees, and volunteers at VP&S have come together to care for patients, under the highest levels of stress, and safeguard the health of the City of New York during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their heroic efforts provided the national example for how to respond to and combat the outbreak. In addition, they have worked around the clock to make major contributions to research on the virus and the development of new potential treatments. In recognition of their extraordinary dedication, sacrifice, and resilience, we will honor our heroes who have lived up to and exceeded the highest values of our profession in the face of unprecedented challenge.
We will also be honoring the truly extraordinary leadership of Dr. Lee Goldman, who stepped down as dean of the medical center in June, after fourteen years of unparalleled accomplishment.
We hope you will join us for the virtual celebration on November 16, 2020.
